Roaming free, one stop at a time – meet the Ricks!

Our journey

Hi! We’re the Ricks, and we’re so glad you found us. If you love adventure, family travel, and a touch of chaos, you’re in the right place!

At the start of 2022, we were just a young(ish) couple, a bit jaded by the normal 9–5 life. So, we bought a van, thinking we could convert it into a camper and add a little more adventure to our lives.

Little did we know, life had other plans. Just a few weeks later – right after finalising our layout plans – we found out a third adventurer would be joining us that year!

By the end of 2022, we had our van, Frank (a 2016 Peugeot Boxer), and a tiny human: our Little Rick.

In the midst of all that change, we decided to shake things up even more – selling our home, quitting Mr Rick’s job, and moving into our van full-time in 2023 for some maternity leave travel. With a baby. Looking back, I still can’t decide if we were brave… or just a little mad. You be the judge!

Once maternity leave ended, we tried going back to a more normal life – work, childcare, routine. And it didn’t take long to realise… we were all miserable! So, we started saving like mad and made a plan: to commit to life on the road, spending as much time as possible together – at least for the first few years of Little Rick’s life.

While our favourite way to travel is in Frank the van, we’re not averse to hopping on planes or trains when adventure calls. For us, it’s all about discovering new places, meeting new people, and making unforgettable memories as a family.

I started Roaming with the Ricks for two reasons. First, to capture our stories and have something to look back on. Second, because so many people kept asking about van life, travelling with a toddler, and how we made this choice. I figured this would be a great place to share it all!

And so, here we are – since mid-2024, we’ve been full-time world nomads / wanderers / wayfarers (choose your preferred term… though I’m leaning towards wayfarers because it gives Moana vibes). We don’t know what the future holds, but for now, we’re loving spending all our time together and embracing a simpler way of life.
